Three Tips for Gifting Plastic Surgery

Beautiful woman with wrapped Christmas gift

Are you considering giving plastic surgery or another cosmetic procedure as a holiday gift? Be careful. Giving the gift of beauty can quickly turn ugly if handled indelicately or not fully thought through. Jacksonville’s Parkway Plastic Surgery offers three tips on gifting gracefully.

  1. No big surprises: If your wife has talked about getting a breast augmentation, your husband has mentioned a facelift or a girlfriend is openly considering Botox, go for it! If not, think twice. Surprising someone with a procedure they haven’t mentioned may come across as a message that you deem her or him inadequate.
  2. First things first: Even if you’ve discussed plastic surgery with a loved one, don’t attempt to secretly arrange a procedure without a comprehensive consultation. First, no reputable surgeon will consider it. Plus, the option you’ve discussed may not be the best plan for the recipient. Remember that plastic surgery has many benefits, but also comes with potential risks and complications. Instead of asking for a particular procedure, instead arrange a consultation so that the two of you can consider all options for the desired outcome and choose your gift accordingly.
  3. Recipient’s choice: When gifting a procedure, understand that it’s not your place to choose the provider. Your own plastic surgeon may be a great match for you, but not necessarily for your loved one. Instead, do a bit of homework and provide the recipient with a list of board-certified plastic surgeons in the area who offer the desired procedure and allow him or her to make that intensely personal decision.

Perhaps the best way to give the gift of beauty is to purchase gift certificates for highly effective, minimally invasive cosmetic treatments that require less commitment than plastic surgery. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Botox, Radiesse and Restylane all are great options and will allow the recipient a chance to get to know the surgeon and staff and develop a level of comfort and trust before committing to a more invasive surgical procedure.

New Global Study Shows Confidence Trumps Youth for Women Undergoing Cosmetic Procedures

Beautiful, confident, mature woman

Recently released results of a biggest-of-its-kind, global study reveal a shift in the primary underlying reasons that women opt for cosmetic surgeries and other procedures. While a younger look once topped the reasons for undergoing these procedures, a sense of confidence now gets equal billing, too.

The study was commissioned by Allergan, the Dublin-based global medical aesthetics company and the maker of Juvéderm® facial fillers. Researchers surveyed upward of 8,000 women living in 16 countries and found that the desire to boost self-confidence today is considered equally as important as aesthetics as a factor in choosing beauty treatments. Titled The Changing Face of Beauty: A Global Report, the study shows that today’s health-savvy women increasingly seek to control how they look as a way to change how they feel as an individual, researchers say.

The study included a survey of women from throughout the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Here’s what they reported:

  • 42 percent say that self-confidence is equally as important as improving the aesthetics of sagging skin;
  • 74 percent make the effort to look good primarily for themselves;
  • 37 percent do it for their romantic partners;
  • 15 percent are influenced to look good by their friends;
  • 63 percent consider general beautification as a top motivator;
  • 50 percent remain primarily driven by the goal of addressing signs of aging (this is true of women from every area except China, where changing or enhancing a specific feature was the key trigger).
  • 56 percent say that skin quality and complexion are as important as body shape.
  • To that end, 65 percent agree that facial fillers are more socially acceptable than they were five years ago.

“What is especially exciting about this new research is the discovery that women around the world are united by an increasing desire to control how their looks evolve with time,” says Caroline Van Hove, Senior Vice President, International Medical Aesthetics at Allergan. “And whether through photography filters, makeup or aesthetic procedures, investing in beauty is their way of positively influencing their image.”

While your time in the sunshine may be limited, it only takes a short time for sun- exposure damage to start. And, if your winter travels take you to snowy regions, know that snow reflects 80 percent of the sun’s light right back onto your skin.
  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and other hydrating fluids, and eat oil-rich foods like salmon and avocado to help keep your body hydrated. Avoid sugary foods and drinks and limit your alcohol and caffeine intake.
