Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift – How to Choose the Best Option for You

Breast augmentation and breast lifts offer different results.

Breast augmentation and breast lifts offer different results.

Breast augmentations are top surgical cosmetic procedure, with more than 286,254 performed in 2014. But an augmentation isn’t always the optimal choice, depending upon the condition of our breasts and your desired outcome. Though less common, breast lifts also can be an effective choice.

Here’s how to choose whether a breast augmentation, breast lift or a combination of the two is the best option for you.

Choose breast augmentation alone if:

  • Your breast drooping is mild.
  • Your nipples remain near the center of your breast but do not point downward.
  • You have visible skin beneath the nipple/areola when looking at your breasts straight on.
  • You want to increase your breast size by at least one cup size.

Choose a breast lift if:

  • Your breast drooping is moderate or severe.
  • Your nipples are at the bottom of your breasts or they point downward.
  • You have no visible skin beneath the nipple/areola when looking at your breasts straight on.
  • You’re already a C or D cup and do not want to increase your cup size.
  • You want to reduce your areola.

Choose a combination of the two procedures if:

  • You want to increase your breast cup size and reduce drooping.
  • You want to maintain projection and roundness of the breast mound.
  • Your breast drooping is severe.

Study Shows Benefits of Breast Augmentation Go Far Beyond Looks – But Only if Approached the Right Way

Considering breast augmentation? The key to successful results is all in your approach and expectations.

Considering breast augmentation? The key to successful results is all in your approach and expectations.

The primary reason that women undergo breast augmentation is to improve their physical appearance and, consequently, their self-esteem. But according to a recent study, the benefits can spill into other important parts of a woman’s life, too.

Researchers reviewed data collected from hundreds of women who underwent breast augmentation or breast lift surgery. Of them, 61 percent reporting having sex more frequently and 70 percent of respondents said their overall sex life satisfaction improved. Many satisfied patients say their surgeries lent them a self confidence boost that helped them progress in their careers and reach other goals. And many report that preparing for their procedures prompted them to adopt healthier lifestyles, giving up smoking and excessive drinking, exercising and eating more nutritiously.

Here at Parkway Plastic Surgery, we’ve helped thousands of women achieve the natural, more voluptuous look they want. But in certain cases, we must encourage women to wait a bit before deciding to move forward on their decisions to undergo breast augmentation.

First, know that your decision must be yours alone. Never undergo a cosmetic procedure of any sort to please a significant other or in an effort to save a faltering relationship. It’s also a good idea to wait until you’re well past a distressing or life-changing occurrence like a divorce, death in the family, job loss or move. And if you’re young and haven’t yet had children, understand that your body still will undergo much change, but your implants won’t. So, the breast implants a woman received in her 20s may no longer look natural in her 50s. In fact, most women who undergo breast augmentation will repeat the procedure once in their lives.

The key to a successful breast augmentation is to approach your procedure with reasonable expectations. Understand that the surgery itself won’t land you a great new job, save your marriage or even make you happy. While it will help you achieve the look you want and help boost your confidence, the rest is up to you.
